Twenty-sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time (Homily)
September 25, 2016 5:00 pm · Father David Mbimadong
Last Sunday the Scriptures reminded us that God is displeased with all dishonest people, and would not tolerate cheats and swindlers. Today the message takes us a little further. The Scriptures point out that when people amass ill-gotten wealth by way of cheating, it not only impoverishes other people, it also corrodes and eats away the morality of those who cheat and to thwart their effort at growing spirituality towards God. It is a great thing to work, to work hard to acquire wealth. But seeking for ourselves all that is beautiful in this life at the expense of others is displeasing to the Lord.
Giving no attention to the precepts of the Lord and paying no heed to the needs of weak and the poor reveals our lack of gratitude to the goodness of the Lord. And when we talk of wealth and riches it is not only about the money it is not about the material goods alone. We have a lot of things that the Lord has planted in us. To show mercy, to be compassionate, to support those who need us most. Some are prisoners in their own homes. Those who are suffering silently. Sometimes we think that it is enough to come to Church and to mind our own business.
