When we love and serve others in our parish, we share lovingly with our brothers and sisters what we have and we build up a community that will also love and serve us. We become part of something greater than ourselves. We feel a sense of belonging. We also develop a sense of compassion when we reach out to those who are most in need. By serving and by giving time, we give everything we have. We give ourselves.
This video made by the Diocese of Corpus Christi for the 2012 Catholic Stewardship Appeal shows us the importance of serving others and of helping one another as a way to accomplish great works:
Stewardship has built the Church. From the earliest disciples, Catholics made the work of the Church a priority of their lives. The great cathedrals and simple country churches where people worship, schools where countless children are educated, hospitals that care for the sick, and charitable institutions that serve the needs of many, have been built by generations of the faithful. They gave, even when they had little to give, because they knew God had called them to be good stewards of the resources he entrusted to them.
We can serve in a variety of ways by providing:
- A helping hand or a strong back.
- Leadership, knowledge or wisdom.
- A listening ear or a gentle smile.
- A new idea.
- Special skills or talents.
