Twenty-eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time (Homily)
October 11, 2015 9:00 am · Father Dan Vanyo

Only be attached to Jesus Christ. Only Him. We've got to be purified from all our other attachments that will keep us from going to Him when we are called from this life. In the first reading we hear in the book of Wisdom, attributed to Solomon, normally, that Wisdom is more precious than any other thing. It's more precious than scepter and throne, which stands for power, fame, status. More than gold or silver - money or property. More than health and comeliness, comeliness another word for beauty, or too much attention to the body.
Catechism says that wisdom is the knowledge of the plan and purpose of God. And we can say more generally, the things of God. It's got to be a priority, the highest priority in our heart and mind. In the second reading, in the Letter to the Hebrews, we hear the Word of God, nothing is concealed from him, and He sees all the reflections of our hearts and minds. The words even pervade our bones. Wisdom and the Word above all things. And then with that in mind we see one of the most well known Gospels, the rich young man. The rich young man had his priorities correct. Remember what he asked Jesus for. It's awesome! Rabbi, how might I inherit eternal life? That's the best thing you can ask for right? How can I get eternal life, and he believed in eternal life, not all of the Jews did.
