Good Friday of the Lord’s Passion - Viernes Santo de la Pasión del Señor (Homily - Homilía)

1. What can we say when we have just witnessed the extraordinary sight of a crucified God? The momentum of Passion narrative has carried us so swiftly through this terrible day, that like many of those who witnessed it, we can’t take it all in.But now, with Christ laid in the tomb, we can contemplate the details of his Passion. We can see his crown of thorns, still red with blood; the bent nails that driven into the wood held fast to the Cross the salvation of the world; the stone that seals the tomb of Jesus and allows the Son of God to rest in the sleep of death.
2. In a special way tonight our eyes rest on the tree of the Cross. The final lines of a poem by St. John of the Cross come to my mind:
“After a long time he climbed a tree,And spread his shining arms,And hung by them, and died,His heart an open wound with love.”
The Cross that we venerate today was, yes, the "tree where the Lord spread his shining arms". From that tree has sprouted the beautiful fruit of Redemption. Our Savior is a crucified man who has ransomed us by paying the ultimate price for us. The Cross is peace for the suffering soul; hope for those who feel beaten down by life; consolation that makes the most terrible hours bearable; the key that opens the gates of Paradise; the ark that leads us to the shores of Heaven; the staff for the wayfarer who wishes to reach his destination; the lamp lit with the oil of the blood of Christ; the sign that, in its weakness, overcomes the mighty; the mast that stands while the sea rages and the world crumbles; the ladder by which God comes to us and by which men rise to Him.
3. In the words of St. Teresa of Jesus, "This sacred cross, An olive tree so dear, With its oil anoints us.” The cross is the sign of Jesus' infinite love for us, the altar of the most beautiful sacrifice, the certainty that love is stronger than sin. Ave crux, spes única ("Hail to the Cross, our only hope.")Tonight we venerate you, we kiss you tenderly, we embrace you with love and respect. From you we learn to open our arms to the needs of our brothers and sisters. You teach us to rise above the passing realities of this world. You point us to heaven, which is our true home, and show us that the path of renunciation is the only way to reach it. Above all, you speak to us of Jesus, who has sanctified you, of the Lamb whose blood has blessed you, of the Son who, dying on you has made us his brothers and sisters.
4. Dear brothers and sisters, today is a day for silence and peace. Let no one be afraid of the enormity of his sins after having witnessed the offering of Jesus Christ on the wood of the Cross. If you have sinned much, come to the Cross. If you are suffering for any cause, come to the Cross. If you are searching for love and meaning, come to the Cross. If you, too, are filled with wounds, come to the Cross. It will be your relief. It will be your consolation. It will be your refuge, your support, and your light.
5. As Catholics we usually ask for Mary's protection and help because today we have received her from the Lord Himself - "Behold your Mother" - and so we turn to her to help us in our needs. This evening, however, I dare say that it is rather the opposite: it is Mary who has special need of us. "Behold your son." Jesus has also given us to her as her children so that we may love her, so that we may accompany her in difficult moments, so that she may not be alone on days like today. Spend the next few hours with her, with no other purpose than to console her sorrowful heart, and let our consolation be the determination to live forever, as she did, whatever the cost, in the Will of the Lord. There we will always find her. There we will always find Jesus.

1. ¿Qué se puede decir cuando acabamos de presenciar el espectáculo portentoso de un Dios crucificado? Éste es sin duda un día para la contemplación. Ahora que Cristo ha sido puesto en el sepulcro, podemos detenernos sin prisa en los detalles de su Pasión: podemos ver su corona de espinas, todavía roja de sangre; los clavos doblados que clavaron en la madera la salvación del mundo; la losa que sella la sepultura de Jesús y que deja dormir al Hijo de Dios en el sueño de la muerte.
2. De manera especial, hoy nuestros ojos descansan en el árbol de la cruz. Me vienen ahora a la mente los versos finales de un poema de san Juan de la Cruz:
«Y a cabo de un gran rato se ha encumbradosobre un árbol, do abrió sus brazos bellos, y muerto se ha quedado asido dellos,el pecho del amor muy lastimado».
La cruz que hoy veneramos ha sido, sí, el «árbol do abrió sus brazos bellos» el Señor. De él ha brotado el fruto hermoso de la Redención. Nuestro Salvador es un hombre crucificado que nos ha rescatado pagando por nosotros un alto precio. La cruz es paz para el alma que sufre; esperanza para quien se siente golpeado por la vida; consuelo que hace llevaderas las horas más terribles; llave que abre las puertas del paraíso; arca que nos lleva a las orillas del cielo; bastón para el caminante que desea llegar a su destino; lámpara prendida con el aceite de la sangre de Cristo; estandarte que, en su debilidad, vence a los poderosos; mástil que permanece mientras se desmorona el mundo; escalera por la que Dios ha venido a nosotros y por la que los hombres se elevan a Él.
3. Con palabras de santa Teresa de Jesús, «es oliva preciosa la santa cruz que con su aceite nos unta y nos da luz». La cruz es la señal del amor infinito de Jesús por nosotros, el altar del sacrificio más hermoso, la certeza de que el amor es más fuerte que el pecado. Ave crux, spes única: hoy te veneramos, te besamos con ternura, te abrazamos con delicadeza y respeto. De ti aprendemos a abrir nuestros brazos a las necesidades de nuestros hermanos. Tú nos enseñas a elevarnos sobre las realidades pasajeras de este mundo. Tú nos señalas el cielo, que es nuestro verdadero hogar, y nos muestras que el camino de la renuncia es la única vía para acceder a él. Sobre todo, tú nos hablas de Jesús, que te ha santificado; del Cordero cuya sangre te ha bendecido; del Hijo que, muriendo en ti, nos ha hecho sus hermanos.
4. Queridos hermanos, hoy es un día para el silencio y la paz. Que nadie se asuste de la enormidad de sus pecados después de haber presenciado el ofrecimiento de Jesucristo en el leño de la cruz. Si has pecado mucho, acércate a la cruz. Si estás sufriendo por cualquier causa, acércate a la cruz. Si andas buscando amor y sentido, acércate a la cruz. Si tú también estás lleno de heridas, acércate a la cruz. Ella será tu alivio. Ella será tu consuelo. Ella será tu refugio. Ella será tu apoyo. Ella será tu luz.
5. Los católicos solemos pedir la protección y la ayuda de María, pues hoy la hemos recibido del mismo Señor: «ahí tienes a tu Madre». Así, acudimos a Ella para que nos ayude en nuestras necesidades. Esta tarde, sin embargo, me atrevo a decir que sucede más bien lo contrario: es María la que tiene especial necesidad de nosotros. «Ahí tienes a tu hijo». Jesús también nos ha dado a Ella como hijos para que la amemos, para que la acompañemos en los momentos difíciles, para que no esté sola en días como éste. Pasemos, pues, las próximas horas con Ella, sin otro propósito que el de consolarla, y que sea nuestro consuelo la determinación de vivir para siempre, como Ella, cueste le que cueste, en la Voluntad del Señor. Allí la encontraremos siempre. Allí encontraremos siempre a Jesús.
