Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time (Homily)

Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time (Homily)

September 04, 2016 11:00 am  · Father Bryan Buenger

Homilies, Ordinary Time

So I arrived a few days ago, and Father Sergio said to me, "I have a few things for you to do." One of them was to preach at the Masses this weekend. It's great, but when he gave that order to me it was pretty late. So I had to read and meditate and pray over it, and when I started to write, I fell asleep. So the hands were on the keyboard and the whole thing just filled with all sorts of letters. I hope that that's not an omen meaning that you guys will fall asleep during this Homily. Here we go.

We hear it often actually, we hear about it every time someone runs for an elected spot in government.  It's a buzzword in business, in education and in the church.  It isn't a bad thing but it have drawbacks, but it has many benefits as well.  It's easy to talk about but it's not so easy to do.  It is in fact a way of life, it's called change.  Jesus certainly ushered in change.  He brought with Him his own revolution.  The Gospel we heard today speaks of radical change in attitude, that Jesus sets in front of all of us.  It wasn't just his Disciples He was addressing, but as the Gospel said, the crowds that were following Him, were is audience.  Jesus is giving us a reality check, if you will.  He is asking us quite directly if we are willing to pay the price that He demands.  In fact He is asking if we really know of the change He has in mind.  Jesus knew quite well the costs involved in this type of change.
