Third Sunday of Easter (Homily)

Third Sunday of Easter (Homily)

Homilies, Easter

Father Blantz says: Last summer a couple of stories came over the internet, that I would like to share with you because they have made my day. They are quite short. It seems that there was one Sunday school of 10 year olds were asked to memorize the 23rd Psalm. You know it, "The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want, In verdant pastures he gives me repose;" You all know it. But they knew this one little kid that could not do it because he didn't have it up here. But they knew he was well meaning and so on and would do his very best. So when the day came for their recitation the children did their best to recite the entire Psalm. Then it was his turn, and he stood before the class and said, "The Lord is my shepherd, and that's all I need to know." And he was right.

Father Blantz continues:

In the Apostles Creed, which we say in most churches in the Easter season, the one we normally say in the Rosary instead of the one at Mass.  We say, "He descended into Hell, the third day He rose again from the dead".  What do we mean by that "He descended into Hell"?  It's not Hell as we know it, they didn't have that concept at all, this was written back in the year 70, or 60, or 50 or something like that.   What the translation should be, He suffered died and was buried, He went wherever dead people go, on the third day He rose again from the dead.  That is what it means.  One 10 year old girl had the perfect answer to it when she was asked, Why did Christ descend into Hell.  She said, "Christ descended into Hell to cancel our reservations."
