The Solemnity Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe (Homily)

As you know today we are celebrating The Solemnity Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. You may be surprised to know that today's feast was not established during the middle ages when most of the world was ruled by kings or emperors. Today's feast is very recent. It was established by Pope Pius XI in 1925. A time when kings and emperors were becoming increasing a remnant of the past. Pope Pius XI established this feast as an attempt counteract the atheism and secularism of that time. In fact at that time there was Bolshevism in Russia, and Fascism in Italy, soon there would be Nazism in Germany.

Now they are all gone, and Jesus Christ's kingdom remains. Never the less we must face other enemies and challenges. When human history is finished and after the collapse of every human kingdom, in the end there will be only Jesus Christ. Only the kingdom of Jesus is enduring and eternal. That's the teaching of the Book of Daniel in today's first reading. This is a reason also for hope as the power of Jesus Christ will overcome all the powers of evil. There may be difficult times. We may wonder where our world is headed. We may worry about Paris, Syria, Mali, terrorists, etc. We may think and rightly so, that morality is going down the sewer. Yet in the big picture, evil will not win out.
