Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord (Homily)

Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord (Homily)

Homilies, Easter

The beautiful feast we are celebrating today, the Feast of the Ascension of our Lord. In our first reading from the Acts of the Apostles, Saint Luke gives us a very graphic, easy to picture description of the Ascension of our Lord. But we can't describe to our satisfaction what happened to Jesus when the cloud took from their site. That cloud tells us there is much more to the Ascension than we can understand or comprehend by ourselves.

What does this feast have to do with us? How can we apply it to our own spiritual lives? Today I want to give you four suggestions about the Ascension that might have some meaning for us. First of all, I think it is important to keep a balanced sense of who Jesus is. Sometimes we may feel very chummy with Jesus, he is our friend, he is our brother, our daily support, one who is always understanding and loving, which is true. But today we are reminded that Jesus is also our God and Lord. He has the authority to tell us how to live, and He deserves our adoration and honor. It is fine to feel close and intimate with Jesus, and he wants us to.
