Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time (Homily)
July 26, 2015 5:00 pm · Father Dan Vanyo

So Elisha the prophet in the first reading, does exactly what prophets should be doing. Somewhere along the way, maybe in his prayer, maybe the Lord just spoke to him, and told him what was going to happen. Feed them, there will be plenty, there will be some left over. Elisha in his obedience, like Nike, He just does it. Simple, simple.
But we get a little bit more. The servant brings some bread, and he says, "Hey, they said to feed the people, but it's not enough." Elisha explains to him, "The Lord said, if you do this, there will be enough and there will be some left over." Elisha repeats the order, the servant obeys the second time, and the miracle happens. Beautiful. The servant does something that was very good. He's kind of like, "Are you sure? I don't think this is going to work. I don't have enough." But he doesn't keep going on and on with it. It gives Elisha a chance to teach, this is more than making a decision on a practical level. The Lord says it will work, just do it.
