Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time (Homily)
August 09, 2015 9:00 am · Father Dan Vanyo
We heard in the first reading, Elijah is on the run, he runs out into the desert, and goes a day without food or water, he comes to a tree, and he's like I'm done. Lord, I'm no better than my fathers, let me die. He lays down and goes to sleep. He is completely exhausted physically, he has depleted his human powers. But before he lays down to sleep he tells that to the Lord. Take me, I'm done. I can't take anymore.
The Angel awakens him, and gives him food. We know it's not Earthly food because he eats it and goes 40 days and 40 nights. Now that's clearly a miracle and clearly not food that's normal. The Angel gives him heavenly food, and the idea is what God does is way more powerful than what you can get from the Earth. We see it again when Jesus feeds the 5000. They only had a few fish and a few loaves of bread and He multiplies it for the glory of God to feed 5000 people. Showing the Father's unlimited bounty. I am not limited by your five loaves and two fish. I can feed any amount of people anytime I want. I'm God. A miracle.
