One year ago today we celebrated this Easter Vigil in an almost completely empty church. On the pews of the church, I found the happy surprise of your photographs, from which many of you smiled at me. You wanted to express your desire to be present at this celebration, this holy night that erases forever the darkness of sin and death.
Thanks be God, you are here today, physically, tangibly, as the risen body of Christ our Lord. Never has your presence brought me greater joy. In this Easter joy, along with the angel of today's Holy Gospel, I announce to you a great joy: Christ is risen! It is difficult - indeed, it is impossible - to express what this night means for all of us. Yesterday I invited you to contemplate the stone that sealed the entrance to the tomb in which Joseph of Arimathea had allowed the body of the Lord to be laid. Look carefully at that stone today: it has been moved, displaced, removed from the opening of the tomb. It proclaims today that everything has happened as Christ foretold. He had to die in order to enter into glory, the first of many brothers and sisters. "Behold the place where they laid him. He is not here".
In this Holy Mass I want to let words of hope fly into the nest of your heart. We cannot allow the difficulties of life to erase the smiles from our faces. We must never allow the crosses and sufferings of this life to rob us of the Easter joy that springs abundantly from this night. For those who are united to Christ, the battle is already won! There is no power in this world or in the next that can defeat the risen Jesus. There is no sin that cannot be forgiven by the Advocate who today intercedes for us before the Father. There is no death that cannot be turned into life.
We have heard in Ezekiel's prophecy the gift of redemption: “I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.” This has been our uninterrupted prayer during the Lenten journey: "Give us a new heart, Lord!” We said that that heart was the Heart of Jesus and tonight, we see it alive, inebriated with the Holy Spirit. We only have to go to the Eucharist so that we can live in the newness of Easter grace. We all have access to Him because Jesus has left his chest wide open in his glorified body: "bring your hand and put it into my side, and do not be unbelieving, but believe."
Today the Church rejoices especially because the family of God grows with these new children. You, dear catechumens, are a great gift to us. You are incontestable proof that Christ is alive and continues to act in our community, in the lives of those who allow themselves to be touched by him. Tonight, in your Baptism, you receive the Father. In the Eucharist, you receive the Son. In Confirmation, you receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The Most Holy Trinity embraces you in these three sacraments and transforms you into new creatures, brothers and sisters of Jesus, children of God, temples of his Presence, heirs of the promises of Heaven. May the Lord bless you today and all the days of your life.
“We know that Christ, raised from the dead, dies no more; death no longer has power over him. As to his death, he died to sin once and for all; as to his life, he lives for God. Consequently, you too must think of yourselves as [being] dead to sin and living for God in Christ Jesus.” Dear brothers and sisters, may these words of St. Paul that we just heard become a reality for us tonight. May we die to sin with Christ and live with God in Christ. May the light of the morning star always shine in our lives, "the one Morning Star who never sets, Christ your Son, who, coming back from death's domain, has shed his peaceful light on humanity, and lives and reigns for ever and ever.” Amen.

Hace hoy un año celebrábamos esta Vigilia Pascual en una iglesia casi completamente vacía. En los bancos de la Iglesia, encontré la feliz sorpresa de vuestras fotografías, desde las cuales muchos de vosotros me sonreíais. Queríais así expresar vuestro deseo por estar presentes en esta celebración, esta noche santa que borra para siempre las tinieblas del pecado y de la muerte.
Gracias a Dios, hoy estáis aquí, físicamente, tangiblemente, como el cuerpo resucitado de Cristo nuestro Señor. Nunca vuestra presencia fue portadora de una mayor alegría para mí. En ese gozo pascual, con el ángel del Santo Evangelio de hoy, os anuncio una gran alegría: ¡Cristo ha resucitado! Es difícil —de hecho, es imposible— expresar lo que esta noche significa para todos nosotros. Ayer os invitaba a contemplar la losa que sellaba la entrada de ese sepulcro en el que José de Arimatea había dejado poner el cadáver del Señor. Mirad bien esa piedra hoy: está removida, desplazada, apartada de la boca de la tumba. Ella proclama hoy que todo ha sucedido como Él lo había predicho. Debía morir para entrar así en la gloria, el primero de muchos hermanos. «Mirad el lugar donde lo colocaron. No está aquí».
En esta Santa Misa quiero dejar que vuelen al nido de vuestro corazón palabras mensajeras de esperanza. No podemos dejar que las dificultades de la vida borren la sonrisa de nuestros rostros. No debemos jamás permitir que las cruces y los sufrimientos de esta vida nos arrebaten la alegría pascual, que brota generosa de esta noche. Para quien está unido a Cristo, ¡la batalla está ya vencida! No hay poder en este mundo ni en el otro capaz de derrotar a Jesús resucitado. No hay pecado que no pueda perdonar el abogado que, desde hoy, intercede por nosotros ante el Padre. No hay muerte que no pueda convertirse en vida.
Hemos escuchado en la profecía de Ezequiel el don de la redención: «os daré un corazón nuevo y os daré un espíritu nuevo. Arrancaré de vuestros cuerpos el corazón de piedra y os daré un corazón de carne». Ésta ha sido nuestra plegaria ininterrumpida durante el camino cuaresmal: «¡danos un corazón nuevo, Señor!». Dijimos que ese corazón era el Corazón de Jesús y esta noche, lo vemos vivo, ebrio del Espíritu Santo. Solo tenemos que acudir a la Eucaristía para recibirlo, para que podamos vivir en la novedad de la gracia pascual. Todos tenemos acceso a Él porque Jesús ha dejar su pecho abierto en su cuerpo glorificado: «dame tu mano, y métela en mi costado, y no seas incrédulo sino creyente».
Hoy la Iglesia se alegra especialmente porque la familia de Dios crece con estos nuevos hijos. Vosotros, queridos catecúmenos, sois un gran regalo para nosotros. Sois la prueba incontestable de que Cristo está vivo y sigue actuando en nuestra comunidad, en las vidas de los que se dejan tocar por Él. Esta noche, en vuestro Bautismo, recibís al Padre. En la Eucaristía, recibís al Hijo. En la confirmación, recibís el don del Espíritu Santo. La Santísima Trinidad os abraza en esos tres sacramentos y os transforma en criaturas nuevas, hermanos de Jesús, hijos de Dios, templos de su presencia, herederos de las promesas del cielo. Que el Señor os bendiga hoy y todos los días de vuestra vida.
«Sabemos que Cristo, una vez resucitado de entre los muertos, ya no muere más. La muerte no tiene dominio sobre él. Porque su morir, fue un morir de una vez para siempre, y su vivir, es un vivir para Dios. Lo mismo vosotros, consideraos muertos al pecado y vivos para Dios en Cristo Jesús». Queridos hermanos: que estas palabras de san Pablo que acabamos de escuchar se hagan realidad para nosotros esta noche. Que muramos al pecado con Cristo y vivamos para Dios en Cristo. Que en nuestras vidas brille siempre la luz del lucero matutino, «lucero que no conoce ocaso y que es Cristo, tu Hijo resucitado, que volviendo del abismo, brilla sereno para el linaje humano, y vive y reina por los siglos de los siglos». Amén.
