Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph (Homily)

Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph (Homily)

December 27, 2015 9:00 am  · Father Dan Vanyo

Homilies, Christmas & Epiphany

entry.speaker.one().title

Three things about the first reading. Normally with the Holy Family you would want to go to the models of Mary, Joseph and Jesus. But from the first reading I have three things I want to talk about.

Aging parents, our older parents, parents of the adult children.  How do we treat them?  The book of Sirach gives us good advice.  I am going to touch on three pieces of advice.  One, my son take care of your father when he gets old.  This of course would include the mother, we all know that.  Take care of your father when he gets old.  We do have a reputation that is problematic in the United States, that when our parents get old, we dump them into a nursing home.  Thus the joke, "be good to your children, they choose your nursing home".  It's funny but often humor is speaking to a truth or at least a tendency.
