Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph (Homily)

Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph (Homily)

Homilies, Christmas & Epiphany

Today we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family Jesus, Mary and Joseph. And so often in the Gospels we receive a lesson on how to obey God's Law. And in today's reading we hear about a moment in the life of Christ. In Luke's gospel, Jesus is 12, and we hear his first recorded words. He was approaching the age of his bar mitzvah at 13 and would be considered a man.

Some read this Gospel and wonder how Mary and Joseph could have lost Jesus, but cultures are different, and many parents today keep a very short leash on their kids and want to know where they are at every minute.  When I was young, being gone all day was common.  There was a phrase, come home when the lights come on.  It was probably common for Jesus.  Family and friends family traveled in caravans for friendship, support and protection.  Kids running around together was to be expected.
