First Sunday in Lent (Homily)

First Sunday in Lent (Homily)

February 22, 2015 11:00 am  · Sergio Muñoz Fita

Homilies, Lent

entry.speaker.one().title

Perhaps you have heard the story about the Priest that asked his parishioners: Do you find it difficult to resist temptation? One of his parishioners answered: I find it not difficult at all, because when it comes along, I just give in to it.

This story describes something that sometimes happens in our own spiritual life. Sometimes we are defeated before we've even begun to fight. The Gospel for the first Sunday of Lent is always the Gospel about how Jesus spent 40 days in the desert being tempted and in fasting and prayer. Saint Matthew and Saint Luke give us a fuller description of Jesus' temptation. Saint Mark gives us a very brief description, telling us only that Satan was there to tempt Jesus. As we can see whenever anyone, no matter who they are, is trying to love and serve God faithfully, Satan is there to see how he can keep it from happening.
