Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time (Homily)
August 02, 2015 11:00 am · Father Dan Vanyo

Would that we had died in Egypt, by our flesh pots, etcetera. They are saying in the first reading, that it would have been better dying as a slave in the land of Egypt as long as their bellies were full. Rather than as free men, thirsty, hungry but alive and free in Jesus Christ. How sad.
In just days, weeks before they had seen all of those incredible miracles that the Lord did on their behalf to get them away from the Egyptians. How soon they forgot and what trumped all of their experiences was, my belly, my flesh pot. And to that quickly to start thinking thoughts like, what good is all that we have experienced, it would have been better to die in Egypt. Very sad. How quickly. We can understand a little bit how the Lord became angry. After all he did, for people to do 180s that quickly, but when do we sound like that? When do we complain about fasting, when do we complain about abstaining from meat on Fridays?
